LACEY, Wash.—Unigen Inc. launched Bakutrol™, a triple-acting botanical skincare ingredient offering anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory and anti-scarring benefits. Unigen is currently discussing licensing and supply agreements with manufacturers and marketers of skincare, makeup, fragrance and hair care products. Nearly 85 percent of the U.S. population between the ages of 12 to 24 will develop some type of microbial or inflammatory skin condition such as acne. Current topical anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory and anti-scarring treatments, such as benzoyl peroxide and retinoids, often cause skin irritation, dryness and other unwanted side effects which limit compliance and reduces effectiveness.

Unigen’s Bakutrol is a natural botanical alternative, derived from the novel plant extract Psolarea corylifolia, and has been scientifically proven to visibly improve skin appearance. Bakutrol contains bakuchiol, a compound which has been shown to inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria and to inhibit the COX/LOX inflammatory pathways. In clinical studies, Bakutrol reduced both inflammatory and non-inflammatory acne lesions without the adverse side effects often found with harsh chemicals. Additionally, Bakutrol significantly reduces scarring or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), the dark spots left behind long after the acne lesion has healed.  It has been thoroughly safety tested by independent third-party institutes and has shown no adverse side effects. Bakutrol is highly compatible in formulation with other acne care ingredients, such as salicylic acid, and can be used as an active agent in creams, lotions, gels, masks and other cosmetic products. Additionally, Bakutrol has multiple global patents pending.
