Supplier’s Day 2011

This week the NYSCC hosted Supplier’s Day 2011. I had a great time. The show floor was busy with attendees and exhibitors talking shop and finding out what’ new. So what’s new?

Well, Kemin’s Personal Care division is new. They just launched in March and they have some exciting functional and active ingredients. In the bottle (i.e., functional ingredients, which now I understand thanks to Erin and Marsha), Kemin is offering a water-soluble spearmint-derived ingredient—Spearamox™—that’s good in toners, linen sprays, etc., for color stability maintenance; an oil soluble rosemary-derived ingredient—Rosamox™—for anti-rancidity that substantially increased the stability of palm oil in an efficacy test; and a soy-based emulsifier—Lysofix—with dual functionality as a moisturizer. Out of the bottle (i.e., active ingredients), Kemin’s nutraceutical staple—FloraGLO Lutein®—has been cross examined for its use in topical applications. Derived from marigold extract, their lutein ingredient did well in skin tests for hydration, elasticity and environmental protection. One thing I liked about Kemin’s initiatives is they handle the entire process in-house—from seed to finished state.

And moving from the seed to the water, Aqua Bio Technology’s marine-derived ingredient—Aquabeautin XL™—has a lot of promise in the skin care category. Data and preliminary results show how this ingredient derived from the hatching fluid of salmon exfoliates skin while rejuvenating and healing it. This summer they’re releasing new data. Check back in the next month or two because we’ll have it posted.

And I got a little lesson in proteins from TRI-K. Their newest gluten-free, quinoa-based ingredient—Quinoa Pro Ex—restores and boosts hair health. Studies show it repaired hair and restored hydration, increased hair combability and improved gloss value by 51 percent after five uses.

Thinking like a girl, I asked about buildup, as I associate glossy hair with buildup. They had an answer for everything! In a 20-day study no residual Quinoa Pro EX buildup was left on hair. I was fascinated with their lip protection ingredient derived from mustard seed sprout. Being a journalist and not a formulator or scientist, the chemical process that takes place to create a desired effect always intrigues me. So basically, because mustard is an irritant, when applied topically to the lip it causes irritation and stimulates blood flow, which causes a color effect. It also offers short-term hydration and a prolonged plumping effect. Aragan oil seems to be a buzz ingredient. Their argan oil is derived from the bark and it works on the dermal layer of skin. Their SunActin sunflower sprout extract reduces oxidative stress and cellular damage caused by the sun. They have a lot of stuff going on. Talk to Lauren or Mark if you want to know more. They were a great team, full of info.

That’s my recap. You have a new ingredient you want to discuss? Do it on SupplySide Community. Lots of chatter happening there. I’m off to the Sustainable Cosmetic Summit in New York.

Happy Friday.
