More Makeup Ingredient Wars

There seems to be a perpetual battle waging against makeup formulators and the ingredients they’re choosing to include in their personal care products. I think what’s interesting about this battle is it’s finally researching the “surface", i.e., more consumers are finally starting to question what’s in their beauty products and the media is covering it more predominately.

Wpbf.com recently interviewed Khalique Ahmed, a professor of chemistry and physics at Lynn University, about irritating ingredients in makeup and their long- and short-term effects on health. “The problem is this, the cosmetics industry and FDA is speaking a language which the public does not understand," Ahmed said, according to Wpbf.com.

Parabens are constantly in the line of fire, as studies have linked them to cancer and other medical issues. But they’re not the only ingredients on the blacklist; lead and mercury are also a concern. Many companies are in the business of monitoring ingredient inclusions and their safety. David Andrews, a chemist with non-profit watchdog, Environmental Working Group, said, “We compiled more than 65,000 products covering more than7,000 ingredients and we match them with health and safety information," as reported by Wpbf.com.

The Safe Cosmetics Act of 2010 was proposed in hopes of buckling down on matters such as these; but it, too, is controversial. This area of concern will continue to draw a lot of attention as regulations change and consumers continue to demand healthier products.
