Formulating Hair Care Products with AHAs

12/17/2008

Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) are a popular ingredient in anti-aging skin care formulations, but may actually have application in specialty hair care products as well. In an article on SpecialChem4Cosmetics, consultant Nick Morante noted AHAs, particularly glycolic acid, are finding their way into products to benefit the scalp, as these exfoliants can help speed skin renewal and distribute scalp oils.

However, he noted care in product formulation is critical to avoid concerns such as irritation and sun sensitivity that are linked to higher levels of AHAs, particularly among consumers with sensitive skin. That said, companies such as Thomas Roth have effectively added glycolic acid into hair care products to promote scalp health and enhance the health of the hair by delivering other beneficial compounds such as antioxidants.
