Lather Up With Sulfate-Free Shampoos

03/31/2009

We like shampoos that create lots of bubbles and suds. The problem with big bubbles is the sulfates, such as sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) and sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). They often defeat the purpose of shampooing with their negative side effects, including dryness and damage to the hair follicle.

Companies such as Beautorium.com and Frederic Fekkai offer shampoos free of sulfates. Many companies are starting to feature organic and “green” lines that use palm and sugar surfactants, or gylcerine and glucosides from corn and sugar. Instead of just a big show of bubbles with potential damaging agents, these ingredients actually clean hair without irritating the skin.
