Mintel Predicts Key Cosmeceutical, Beauty Trends

02/26/2009

SECAUCUS, N.J.—The demand for value, organic and natural ingredients, interest in anti-aging products, and cutting-edge ingredients are major factors to watch in the fast-growing cosmeceutical and personal care sector, according to Mintel Beauty Innovation, a service of Mintel, a leading market research firm. The firm placed the market for natural and organic personal care products at $465 million, a growth of 35 percent since 2005. Mintel also reported nearly 30 percent of U.S. beauty products launched in 2008 were organic, ethical or all-natural, up from 23 percent of product launches in 2007.

Mintel’s director of CPG trend insight, Lynn Dornblaser, will be speaking about the topic at the upcoming SupplySide East trade show and conference April 27 to 29 in Secaucus, N.J. Her presentation, “Cutting Edge Ingredients in Cosmeceuticals,” is part of the newly expanded Cosmeceutical Track at SupplySide East. Dornblaser will touch on upcoming ingredients for functional cosmetics and skin care such as peptides, maca root, baobab, acerola, turmeric, peony and moringa seed. She will also address how these cosmeceutical ingredients tie in with the key beauty trends that Mintel has identified for 2009, such as austerity, chic, turbo beauty, extreme ethical and beauty food.

Further supporting the idea that these natural, functional ingredients offer significant opportunity, Mintel has also reported that for the first time ever, sales of anti-aging skin care products surpassed sales of facial cleansers, with the anti-aging products accounting for more than $1.6 billion in 2008. The firm predicted continued robust growth in the category, with sales growing 20 percent through 2013.

Dornblaser’s presentation is set for Tuesday, April 28, from 11 to 11:50 a.m. The full education program is available online. Discounts for early registration are in place through March 27. In addition to the 30-session education program, SupplySide East also features an exhibit hall with hundreds of ingredient suppliers displaying natural, healthy and innovative ingredients.
