Alisa Marie Beyer, president of the Benchmarking Company, outlined the hot beauty trends for 2010 in the March issue of Skin Inc, highlighting some unique trends to in the beauty industry.

  • Touch-up Tools. Home Depot isn’t the only one to adopt the do-it-yourself attitude. The beauty industry is offering consumers at-home spa treatments such as hair removal and exfolication.
  • Free Radical Warriors. Antioxidants are showing no signs of slowing their use in the natural products industry, and that includes usage in cosmeceuticals and other beauty and skin care mediums. They are ubiquitous in fortified foods and beverages, and are working their way into anti-aging formulas and makeup, including eye shadows, lipsticks and foundations.
  • True Youth. Being a teenager is tough. Being a teenager with acne, dermatitis or other skin ailments—well … that’s tougher. Skin care lines for the truly youthful are continuing to expand in this unique market via product launches, appealing packaging and new ingredients.
  • Technicolor. Perhaps one of the most interesting up-and-coming trends is the vamping up of color-cosmetic applicators. Beyer mentions a few fun apps slated to hit the market, including a roller-ball applicator designed to “roll out” an antioxidant-enhanced formula for age spots and crinkles on the skin.
  • Wide-Eyed. How many cliché sayings have been made about the eyes? They are the windows to our souls, right? Well, it looks like their window is opening a little wider. 2010 is opening up the eye with new eye shadow colors and brow shapes. It’s reintroducing the nude eye with soft “buttercup yellows and spring-fresh lilacs”; but not worry, the smoky eye isn’t dead; it’s just taken on a new look with “peacock greens and bold corals.”

2010 is shaping up to be a year full of color and fun apps that make beauty and youth affordable, customizable and accessible.
