One of the most iconic cartoon women in the history of animation is Popeye’s Olive Oyl. The comic strip made its debut in 1919 and later became a successful cartoon. Her youthful skin, black hair, lean build and oversized feet resonated with viewers; and, for many, her name became synonymous with youth. Apparently, there is some truth to olives and suppleness. A recent study published in The Journal of Nutrition found olive leaf extract and its component oleuropein, offered preventative effects on chronic UVB-induced skin damage and carcinogenesis, and tumor growth. Five-week old male, hairless mice were separated into six groups, including a non-UVB group, a vehicle-treated UVB group (control), two olive leaf extract-treated UVB groups, and two oleuropein-treated UVB groups. Researchers found the extract and oleuropein significantly inhibited increases in skin thickness and reductions in skin elasticity, and skin carcinogenesis and tumor growth.
