Marketing Skin Lightening Products Responsibly

02/06/2009

Many mainstream companies are making claims about their products’ abilities to lighten, whiten and/or brighten the skin, but the substantiation may not always fit the claim, reported Vispi Kanga, writing the final article in a series on the topic of skin lightening for SpecialChem4Cosmetics. Of particular importance when consumers select a product is the depth of discoloration or pigmentation, which can determine whether a skin-lightening product will work or if something akin to laser treatment is necessary.

Claims—overt and implied—are a tricky area, and regulatory authorities around the globe are challenging questionable ones, such as “permanent skin lightening” (melanin is continuously produced by the skin, making ongoing treatment necessary to maintain results) or photos that have been manipulated to increase lighting and contrast. Further, there are some indications of changing cultural attitudes in areas such as Asia and the Arab world, where fair skin has been traditionally associated with beauty and high status.
