GIBBSTOWN, N.J.—EMD Chemicals introduced Eusolex® UV-Pearls B-O, encapsulated avobenzone for the water phase. Formed with a micro-encapsulation system that entraps the organic UV-filters and provides aqueous dispersions of oil-soluble UV-filters, this product reduces the usual tackiness contributed by oily UV filters and allows formulators to develop better formulations.

To achieve this result, avobenzone (Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane) is solubilized with octocrylene in an ideal ratio in order to prevent avobenzone from crystallizing and avoid solubility issues. The mixture has an intrinsic broad-spectrum protection where the attenuation from UVB is balanced with UVA absorbance. It’s possible to formulate photostable broad-spectrum sunscreens and day care products just using two UV filters. Moreover, it has been shown that combining avobenzone and octocrylene in the oil phase with Eusolex UV-Pearls B-O in the water phase will enhance the SPF values, compared to the same amount of UV-filters just in the oil phase. Eusolex UV-Pearls B-O exhibits a high degree of safety, preventing direct skin contact with UV-filters, leading to a reduced skin penetration and a lowered allergic potential.
