Moisturizers Linked to Skin Cancer

08/14/2008

Common moisturizing creams helped cause skin cancers to spread and tumors to grow in mice exposed to UV radiation, reported researchers at RutgersUniversity on Thursday.

According to HealthDay News, lead researcher Allan H. Conney said the creams that were tested contained tumor-causing capability. Conney also emphasized this research has only been done on mice and the effect on humans is unknown.

Moisturizers in the study included Dermabase, Dermovan, Eucerin Original Moisturizing Cream and Vanicream.

Conney told HealthDay that there are several ingredients in the creams that contribute to tumor growth.

The research on this study appeared in the Aug. 14 issue of the Journal of Investigative Dermatology.
