LycoRed’s researchers have come up with a novel cosmeceutical invention: an oral dietary supplement to prevent sunburn.
While most agents that offer skin protection from the sun are topical applications, this carotenoid composition, made up of lycopene, phytoene, phytofluene, and optionally vitamin E, is delivered as a dietary supplement (in capsule form) or in a fortified food or beverage.
“This is a natural lycopene composition that can be either encapsulated in a soft gel or easily added to a beverage to create a year round fortified sun protection drink,” said Zohar Nir, Ph.D., vice president of new product development, LycoRed. “While it does not replace topical sunscreen, when taken daily, it provides a degree of both ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) protection even during the months of the year when one is not likely to apply a topical lotion,”
IP Australia granted patent protection to LycoRed Ltd. due to the proven antioxidant activity of lycopene. Research supports the statements that natural lycopene is more effective than synthetic forms in protecting the skin from ultraviolet damage. In addition, the nutrient’s efficacy is improved when combined with other antioxidants found naturally in the tomato such as phytoene, phytofluene and vitamin E.
