Exploring the Mystery of Cosmeceutical Moisturizers

01/19/2009

Advances in cosmeceutical science have led to development of multi-functional products that aim to moisturize the skin, even its tone and texture, reduce antioxidant damage and protect from ultraviolet (UV) radiation, Hilary Baldwin, M.D., said at the Winter Clinical Dermatology Conference.

Dermatology Times reported Baldwin specifically focused on the evolution of moisturizers, which incorporate both humectants to suck up moisture and emollients to prevent transepidermal water loss. Beyond these functional ingredients, companies are including other active compounds for their skin health benefits including topical antioxidants that combat oxidative stress, collagen-stimulating ingredients (i.e., peptides, copper, human growth factors) to plump up the skin, and sunscreen agents for photoprotection.
