ORF Genetics Opens Green Factory; Introduces Plant Growth Factors

REYKJAVIK, Iceland—ORF Genetics, a biotechnology company, opened its new 22,000-ft cultivation facilities in Grindavik, Iceland. The state-of-the-arte green factory is located in the middle of a lava field and uses geothermal energy for its cultivation of genetically engineered barley. The barley is cultivated in a soil-less hydroponic system called the Orfeus™ system that allows for the production of up to 90 different proteins at a time. This system and the facility provides the company with the flexibility to easily scale product production according to the requirements of different customers and markets.

ORF currently has more than 100 different growth factors in development and 10 ISOkine™ growth factors on the market. In another announcement, the company introduced these growth factors to the cosmetic industry, noting that these biorisk-free growth factors have been shown to have great potential as anti-aging agents. They are also alternatives to growth factors produced from bacterial- or animal-based production platforms; ORF’s plant-based system provides a green and cost-effective option, while eliminating any potential risk of toxins or contaminants.
