Rare Apple Stem Active Receives Innovation Award

05/20/2008

BUCHS, SwitzerlandMibelle Biochemistry was awarded the 2008 BSB European Innovation Prize for cosmetics and chemistry in the actives/naturals category. Its PhytoCellTech™ Malus Domestica was awarded the prize as the first active based on plant stem cells to protect skin stem cells. Mibelle used a novel, patent-pending plant cell culture technology to develop the active from apple stem cells; the dedifferentiated callus cells were cultivated from a rare Swiss apple called Uttwiler Spätlauber. The cells are rich in epigenetic factors and metabolites, which assure the longevity and vitality of skin cells. According to the company, the active has been shown to protect skin stem cells and delay the senescence. The application of plant cell cultures to maintain the function of skin stem cells holds promise for anti-aging formulations.
