Acid Peels Promise Relief for Acne Sufferers

ST. LOUIS ,— Millions of Americans suffer from mild to moderately severe facial acne. A new study compared alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) peels to beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) peels; the results suggest both peels are similarly effective and may offer successful treatment to facial acne (Dermatologic Surgery 2008; 34(1): 45-51).

Researchers at Saint Louis University School of Medicine recruited 20 patients for this split-face, double blind, randomized, controlled study. Each patient was treated with a chemical peel every other week for six weeks, with follow-up visits one month and two months after the last treatment. AHA was applied to one side of the face; BHA to the other. By the second treatment, both peels showed significant results; however, at two months post-treatment, the BHA side had sustained more effectiveness while more adverse side effects were reported with the AHA side. At the outcome, the results suggest both treatments may be highly effective in treating mild to moderately severe facial acne.
