Addressing Eczema with Nutrition

11/11/2008

Eczema is a worrisome condition for many children and adults, and leads some to life-long searches for the right therapies to address this chronic condition. In the National Post, dietitian Jennifer Sygo detailed some of her experiences with nutraceutical ingredients she used to address her eczema.

Evening primrose oil (EPO), for example, is an omega-6 EFA rich in gamma linolenic acid (GLA); while most omega-6s are pro-inflammatory, GLA is incorporated into the skin cells to increase hydration and moisture. Results on omega-3 fish oil for treating eczema, however, haven’t been as positive. Sygo also noted vitamin E and probiotics may have efficacy in addressing certain symptomatic complaints, although research is far from conclusive.

Ultimately, she suggests consumers may wish to try different dietary and nutritional interventions, tracking their own results and being sure to give the intervention enough time to take effect.
