OASIS Files Motion; Law Suit Violates Free Speech

MILPITAS, Calif.--OASIS Inc. (Organic and Sustainable Industry Standards Inc.), a non-profit trade association for the personal care and cosmetic industry, has filed a motion charging All One God Faith Inc. (AOGF, Inc.), (dba Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soap) with a
deliberate attempt to stifle free speech. The First Amendment Project (FAP), a nonprofit organization that protects and promotes freedom of information, expression and petition, is representing OASIS. The motion asks the court to dismiss a law suit filed in May 2008 by AOGF, Inc. in San Francisco Superior Court seeking to prohibit OASIS and others from offering or using verifiable voluntary OASIS organic standards for cosmetics and other personal care products.

On March 4, 2008, OASIS posted its first public draft standard on its web site OasisSeal.org, which addressed the issues of organic claims on health and beauty products. The draft standard, now in its 12th version, is still being tested and revised. There are currently no products on store shelves bearing the OASIS organic seal. On March 18, 2008, AOGF Inc. issued a press release and a cease and desist letter threatening to sue OASIS and 19 other companies if they did not agree to abandon all organic standards. In May 2008, AOGF then sued 10 of those companies, OASIS and an organic standard-certifier based in France, to prohibit the use or offering any voluntary organic cosmetic standard.
