Ins and Outs of Beauty Supplements

LAS VEGAS—In the search for eternal youth, more consumers are turning to beauty supplements to help starve off age-related skin conditions. David Djerassi, founder and president, Intrachem Technologies. He presented studies that showed the effectiveness of carotenoids, polyphenols, essential fatty acids (EFAs), polysaccharides and vitamins in maintaining the health and beauty of skin and hair at SupplySide West.

Carotenoids are powerful antioxidants that fight oxidative stress by battling free radicals. They also offer a photo-protective benefit and can reduce DNA damage. Carotenoids with scientific backing include: lycopene, lutein, alpha carotene and beta carotene.

Polyphenols, including anthocyanins, flavonols, flavanones, catechines, carnosic and proanthocyanidins, protect against free radicals, stabilize collagen and elastin, reduce inflammatory activity, regulate the immune system and promote enzymatic activity.

Supplementing with omega-3 and omega-6 EFAs have shown to reduce of inflammation, which is associated with wrinkling, he said. Studies have also shown they offer a reduction in skin roughness and an increase in skin moisture.

The polysaccharide hyaluronic acid is an effective moisturizer, due to strong water holding capacity. And, supplementing with vitamins increases skin elasticity, moisture and collagen.

Djerassi also offered marking tips for beauty supplement manufactures. He said there is wide appeal among women ages 24 to 55, high school and college-educated men and women, and teens concerned about ecology. All of these consumers want instant results and easy-to-use products. Awareness and public relations campaigns are keys to building a consumer base, he said.

He concluded his presentation by addressing regulatory aspects of these fictional foods and dietary supplements, which vary by country.
