The Dangers of UVB Outweigh UVA Exposure

07/09/2008

DUARTE, Calif.—A study published in The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) noted ultraviolet B (UVB) light is more likely to cause skin cancer than ultraviolet A (UVA). Researchers from the City of Hope National Medical Center investigated the kinetics of repair for UVA- and UVB-induced DNA lesion in relation to mutagenicity in transgenic mouse fibroblasts irradiated with equilethal doses of UVA and UVB in comparison to simulated-sunlight UV. Additionally, they analyzed data on the genetic human skin cancers. The researchers found that cells were able to repair damage caused by UVA light more easily than UVB exposure. This finding may help formulators and scientists create new research and treatment for ultraviolet exposure.
