PCPC Strengthens Cosmetic Review Program

WASHINGTON—The Personal Care Products Council (PCPC) announced changes and additions to the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) panel to expand the capacity of the CIR’s panel and staff to assess the safety of cosmetic ingredients. The changes will accelerate the pace of cosmetic ingredient safety reviews and ensure that the program continues to keep on track with advances in scientific safety assessment processes. Changes that are planned to take place over the remainder of the year and fully instituted by 2009 include two new experts added to the panel, preparation of new data for review and enhancements to the CIR infrastructure.

The CIR is an independent, nonprofit panel of scientists and physicians who review and assess the safety of ingredients used in cosmetics worldwide. The FDA and the Consumer Federation of America serve as liaison members.
