DHA Provides Relief for Eczema Sufferers

02/05/2008

BERLIN —Supplementing with omega-3 (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) docosahexaenoic (DHA) may offer bioactive benefits for atopic eczema sufferers.

Atopic eczema has been linked to a Western diet consisting of poor n-3 PUFA intake and  a surplus Omega-6 (n-6) PUFA consumption. German researchers aimed to determine the efficacy of DHA in eczema patients (British J Dermatology 2007. OnlineEarly Articles) in a randomized, double blind, controlled study included 53 patients, aged 18 to 40 years, who received either 5.4 g DHA daily or an isoenergetic control of saturated fatty acids for 8 weeks. The outcome was assessed by the SCORAD (severity scoring of atopic dermatitis) index at 0, 4, 8 and 20 week intervals. At 8 weeks, the DHA group showed significant improvement of atopic eczema in terms of a decreased SCORAD.
