A recent proposal from the California Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment may put acrylamide, a chemical naturally found in starchy foods such as French fries and potato chips that is commonly used in cosmetics, on Prop 65’s radar as a reproductive toxicant. Prop 65 requires companies to notify the public of the chemical inclusion. It also requires the state to make available a list of chemicals that cause birth defects, cancer or other deleterious effects on reproduction. Currently, the list has 775 chemicals.
