LAS VEGAS—Functional foods and beverages with beauty health ingredients, like collagen, hyaluronic acid and antioxidants, are on the rise, said Lynn Dornblaser, director, CPG Trend Insight, Mintel International Group, in a presentation at SupplySide West. She said beverage product launches are by far the largest growing category in this arena.
U.S. consumers would like to see food or drink that makes their skin look younger (38 percent) and would like to see foods that elevate their mood (35 percent). However, 63 percent of consumers say functional foods are too expensive.
Current beauty foods and beverages highlight superfruits for their antioxidant properties, diary products for their probiotics, tea for its antioxidants and spices for their internal cleansing abilities. Other ingredients include chocolate, almonds, sweet potatoes and tomatoes.
She stated the market was pioneered in the Asia, especially Japan, with products that featured collagen, hyaluronic acid and antioxidants like CoQ10. In the West, focus remains on antioxidants and other common nutrients, rather than skin care ingredients.
Other trends in this market are products that feature detoxing, after-sun repair, weight loss, whitening, and mood enhancing.
In the video below, she also predicts this market will continue to grow, despite hitting a set back due to the economic downturn.
