HOLZMINDEN, Germany—Since May, Symrise has offered specially developed and Ecocert-certified formulations for cosmetic products, which contain the active ingredient SymRelief®. An important component of this active ingredient is natural alpha-bisabolol. This substance is derived from the oil of the candeia plant, which grows in endangered rainforests. Consequently, Symrise has been investing in sustainable bisabolol production in Brazil for years.
The composition of Symrise's certified formulations corresponds to the standards of Ecocert, which is awarded to natural and organic cosmetic products. Natural alpha-bisabolol is obtained from the oil of the candeia plant that grows in the southeastern and central western regions of Brazil. Since more and more of the highland rainforest is being destroyed, candeia is also increasingly becoming endangered.
As one of the largest international suppliers of natural alpha-Bisabolol, Symrise exclusively uses bisabolol that comes from farmed plants. Protecting the world we live in and being committed to sustainable and responsible resource management are fundamental values of the corporate philosophy. Upholding these principles in terms of environmental protection and ecological concerns is binding for licensing partners and suppliers as well. Symrise's Brazilian partners have also given moral and financial support to a very promising project at Universidade Federal de Lavras. This research examines what conditions are needed to cultivate the native candeia plant.
