NEW YORK—Consumers are increasingly seeking out specific ingredients in cosmeceutical and personal care products for their health benefits. PR firm Pierce Mattie released its list of expected hot ingredients marketers may wish to highlight in their offerings in 2009. Among them:
Bountiful Berries: The Brazilian berry acai, Chinese offering goji (or wolfberry), acerola from South America and all-American blueberry all offer powerful antioxidant profiles and are making their presence known in anti-aging products from skin care to hair care.
Treats from the East: Argan oil has been used by Moroccan women for skin and hair care, and delivers natural vitamin E and essential fatty acids. Similarly, myrrh and turmeric have storied histories in India, used for perfumery and antiseptic/anti-inflammatory effects, respectively.
African Delight: Baobab fruit is rich in vitamins and has great anti-aging properties, which are being touted in skin creams, scrubs and even hair care products.
Good Bugs: Pierce Mattie PR called probiotics a “buzzword” for beauty brands in 2008, but look for science-based skin care products incorporating beneficial bacteria.
Synthetic Collagen: Chemically known as palmitoyl tripeptide-3, this anti-aging ingredient can help fight fine lines and wrinkles.
