Korean Botanicals Hold Cosmetic Promise

10/25/2007
JEJU, Korea—A research team from Cheju National University and Kangwon National University recently screened approximately 60 plants collected from Jeju Island, located in the southernmost part of the Republic of Korea, examining free radical scavenging capacity, elastase inhibition and reduction of MMP-1 mRNA expression (J Cosmet Sci. 2007;58:19-33). Twelve extracts, including Nymphaea tetragona (rhizome), Typha orientalis (seed) and Torreya nucifera (leaf), showed significant free radical scavenging activity. T. orientalis and Persicaria hydropiper (whole plant) were highly effective in the anti-elastase inhibition assay. In the final test, T. orientalis, P. hydropiper, N. tetragona and Filipendula glaberrima (root) were able to inhibit the expression of MMP-1 in human fibroblast cells.
