Asiaticoside Reduces Periorbital Wrinkles

SEOUL, KOREA—A recent Korean study found treatment with an asiaticoside-containing cream can attenuate or significantly improve periorbital wrinkles (Intern J Cosmet Surg. 2008;30(3):167-173) (DOI: 10.1111/j.1468-2494.2008.00440.x). Twenty-seven female volunteers applied a base cream with the active compound asiaticoside twice daily to one eye, and a vehicle control cream around the other eye for 12 weeks. After 12 weeks of treatment, there was a significant improvement of the periorbital wrinkles in the majority of the female volunteers. Out of the 27 women examined with periocular wrinkles, 65 percent showed an improvement at the end of the treatment. In three cases, the improvement was 100 percent (disappearance of the crow’s feet), 75 percent ± 1.97 and 79 percent ± 2.82. On six eyes, there was no significant change after the treatment. Most of the periorbital wrinkles were attenuated to some degree, and some women experienced a significant improvement of the periorbital wrinkles on one of their eyes.
