This relatively new concept of enhancing your appearance by the foods you eat, a.k.a. nutricosmetics, is really gaining a lot of momentum. Although, it is surprising this concept took so long to become popular. Foods and supplements fuel the body, providing energy, nutrients and essentials for everyday life, why wouldn’t they also provide the necessary tools for youthful, supple skin? Nevertheless, this burgeoning market is finally catching consumers’ attention; but now the question becomes, which ingredients (foods, supplements, etc.) are most beneficial to skin health?

Sigrid Kramer of Cognis provided an outline of scientific studies on fatty acids and carotenoids that improve the skin structure, skin physiology and skin aging. Lutein, a carotenoid commonly found in vegetables such as spinach is popular for eye health; however, this fat-soluble pigment can counteract the effects of oxidative stress in the skin at the cellular level. Omega-3s, which are popular for heart health, can be used as an anti-inflammatory for skin conditions such as dermatitis and psoriasis, as well as skin reactions such as sunburn.
