Açaí, an Antioxidant for Anti-Aging Formulas

Açaí, the fruit from a palm tree that grows in northern Brazil, is a promising new cosmeceutical ingredient for combating free radicals and ravaging the signs of old age, according to Karina Coyado Bispo, writing in “Cosmetics & Toiletries”. Antioxidants have become increasingly important in the development of burgeoning, new cosmeceutical and personal care innovations. Total Antioxidant Status (TAS), a methodology that has emerged as an important tool in evaluating the potential of an antioxidant, and was recently used to investigate the antioxidant potential or the total antioxidant capacity of an açaí extract. This type of research helps discover new materials with antioxidant potential and is effective as a standard methodology for determining how much potential a material may have in effectively staving off old age.

Results and conclusions of this particular assay kit showed açaí has a total antioxidant status of 26.8±0.6 mM/L.
